What are the colon and the rectum?

The colon and the rectum are parts of the digestive system. It is made up of muscular tubes that break down food for your body to use as energy. One tube is called the small intestine. It connects the stomach to the second tube, called the large intestine. The colon is the first few feet of the large intestine. The rectum is the last few inches of the large intestine. Food that cannot be used by the body passes from the rectum out the anus as a bowel movement.
