Learning about kidney cancer: My House

What are the risk factors for kidney cancer?

Cancer risk factors are things that may put you at higher risk for having cancer. Kidney cancer risk factors may include:

  • Smoking: people who smoke tobacco-especially those who have smoked for a long time-have a higher risk for kidney cancer than those who do not smoke
  • Being obese: people who are obese have a higher risk for kidney cancer than those who are not obese
  • High blood pressure: having high blood pressure increases the risk for kidney cancer
  • Having a family member who has had kidney cancer: a family history of kidney cancer and certain other health problems that run in the family can increase your own risk for having kidney cancer

Be sure to talk with your healthcare provider about your risk factors for kidney cancer.

How do I get screened for kidney cancer?

Right now, there is no sure way to screen for kidney cancer. Many people find out they have kidney cancer when they are tested for other problems or have symptoms, such as blood in the urine or pain in the side. These symptoms may be the same as the ones for other diseases. It is important to work with your healthcare team to know your risk for kidney cancer and to be aware of its symptoms.
